is officially over!
And now that the final judgements have been announced, I can discuss the topic without fear.
Judge feedback was surprisingly kind. Especially considering I may be the first writer to have ever submitted a final round shorter than his/her/its tournament audition. Seriously. The sheer audacity amazes even me.
Still, I did my best with what resources I had at the time, and it seems I helped add a little enjoyment to the world. No regrets.
Speaking of potential misgivings, writing for TJ was a super weird experience. Lots of mixed feelings about that. In fact, the whole writer-character-interaction dynamic was one I felt leery of publicly delving into, but I very much wanted to participate in mippins's tournament. Partly because I'd already promised to join one of her events, but mostly because I have a lot of faith in her ability to host a quality event. She did not disappoint. Thanks, mippins!
Yeah, on the whole, I'd say it was worth taking the plunge.
On a semi-related topic, astute readers may have noticed that my first round was submitted unfinished, before later being completed after all the judging was done. Those readers may also have noticed that my round three is still not done. I still haven't decided whether or not to finish that particular round. I'm leaning towards 'no', but I do have a fair bit of unpublished material already typed up. Seems like a shame to waste it all.
Maybe I'll just post a summary with some of the choicer quotes, either as a scrap or a journal. Something to think about.

Failed Less Badly
I did not reach the official 50,000 word goal for NaNoWriMo. Nor did I reach my own, humbler goal of 25,000 words. However, I did end up writing roughly nine times as much as I did the previous November, so I'm going to rate this year's NaNoWriMo attempt as a partial victory.
November's Challenge
My last attempt at the National Novel Writing Month challenge was less than successful. This year, I've taken steps to ensure a more favorable outcome:
Not currently in a tournament. It's been hard, but I've manged to resist my super-fun OCT addiction. What are these, tears?
Prepared notes and outlining. For some reason, I wasn't aware that this was a thing one can do beforehand. Maybe I was confusing NaNoWriMo with other time-restricted challenges?
Lower personal goal. Officially, we're supposed to shoot for 50,000 words. I'm aiming for 25,000 instead. Sure, it's still technically failing, but I'll be failing with style.
Yup, I've got a
A Very Merry Unbirthday! (Also, Prizes)

Back when my life-years were measured with a single digit, my parents would celebrate the birthdays of my younger sibling and I, as is traditional with many families. But we did differ in one key respect: In order to prevent jealousy towards the special birthday child, we'd celebrate the other child's unbirthday on the same day, complete with a present for the less-officially older.
It meant that birthdays were something of joyful anticipation, no mater whose it was.
And wouldn't you know it? My sibling's birthday is coming up.

How did my year begin?
My year began with me eating leftover funeral cake on my birthday, the day before classes started.
I'm still not sure how to react to that.
How did your year begin?

You should do it, even if it takes you awhile! It'll be all the more satisfying to know that you said everything that you had to say. I had to cut out so much material in all of my rounds and I plan on going back when I have time and slowly adding in all the missing scenes.
I still need to read your rounds, but I've heard so many good things about them from mippins and I'm excited to see your creativity shine! I know when I have a chance to read them I'm going to have a blast just like she did.
I also just want to say that even though I'm not a judge and never faced you, it means a lot to me to know that you stuck with us all the way until the end! This tournament means so much to me, and every time someone new dropped out of the running it broke my heart a little inside. The Exchange Universe is so incredible, it deserved the best send-off that it could. I'm so, so thankful to know that you were willing to tell your story even when you weren't an official competitor any longer.
Thanks for sharing in such a wonderful experience with me and with all of us! The whole tournament is brighter for you having been in it.
