I'm a fantasy writer attempting to make competitive comics for a sci-fi western contest. Also, it's my first ever OC contest. Do I stand a chance? You tell me.

Come visit :icondawildguns:
It's looking to be a fun and unusual contest with teamwork, duels, and shopping.

Edit: adding the following tag thingy.
Comment on this journal and I'll do the folowwing:

a) Tell you why I friended you
b) Associate you with something - fandom, a song, a color, a photo, et cetera
c) Tell you something I like about you
d) Tell you a memory I have of you
e) Ask something I've always wanted to know about you
f) In return, you must post this in your journal.

O.o

...Sooo, when they say they want character references so they can make your coffin to the right dimensions... does that mean, being a tree, you'd be buried AS one instead of in one?

*runs fer the hills!*

You know, my brother expressed similar ideas and sentiments. Maybe you two know something I'm missing =P

a) We retroMUD peeps have to stick together ^_^
b) Tags. I don't think I know anyone else who embraces these community networking things quite so readily.
c) You're friendly and actively seek nice things to say and common ground to share.
d) Seeing your enthusiasm got me to resurrect that feature tag I'd given up on.
e) How long have you been making traditional/digital art?
f) Now go post- oh wait, you already did.

Yay for enthusiasm. And I have a common rule: if I have nothing useful/funny to say, better not say anything. Sometimes I seem to fail at following that rule, though.

e) If we go all the way back to the time I was making stick men comics, that would be about 11 years this summer. I've also done drawings with computers about as long as I've had the things. Gotta start from somewhere, huh. I should try to track my first digital drawing. I'll probably find it on either '95 or '98. I did digital drawings with MS Paint until few years ago. Can you believe I also made poor-man's animations with Paint alone? No other programs. Oh, the times...

Hey Lev? Help me out here. I just posted this in the DAWGS July 1 comment thread, but I figured you must know, right?

...I just learned what an OC battle is. Any of you kind, lovely people care to explain to me just what the participants here are expected to do? In no0b-ese plz? I know it has something to do with storytelling, and your character being given a task. Then what? Where does the competition part come in?

Let's see if I can do this...

The most straightforward part is simple dueling. Let's say you're up against Ted:
- You draw/write an encounter between your character and Ted's (wherein your character wins, possibly by skill or luck)
- Ted's doing the same against you.
- The judges pick the version they like the best (usually based on creativity, unique solutions, entertainment value, understanding of the other character, flow, quality of art, etc.)
- The player with the winning version advances to the next round.
- The player with the losing version is eliminated.

With me so far? Ok, here's where it gets complicated....

DAWGs is different from most tournaments in that it's not always just about simple dueling. There will be times when you're pitted against an npc character. Also, there is a point system based on bounties. These points are called "shells" and you'll need a certain minimum to advance to the next round, otherwise you'll be kicked out.

Shells are important for more than just advancing. Try to get as many as you can.

Be sure and check out the official FAQ of Justice [link]
There you'll find out how the judges plan to judge each piece, more about the planet, what shells are good for, and how to earn bonus shells.

I've read the FAQ and all the comments, but they all seem geared to folks who know already what the OC tournament thing is about.

I grasped the RP part of it, I think... if this were nothing but fighting/dueling, I wouldn't have even tried to enter. So the point is to write the best story that you can, using someone else's character and/or NPCs? Therefore when you get an opponent, you research them and their past fights to do their character justice? And to pick a target NPC, you look for one that you can make an interesting fight out of?

There's also some nuts and bolts I don't get... how many pages/panels is an entry supposed to be? Do you communicate with the player of your opponent, and how much? What do they have to approve before you post an entry? All that sort of thing, the ethics, etiquette, the Way Things Are Done Round Here stuff.

After all that, what I most fear is having to draw someone else's *human* character. But that's what I kinda got in here to force myself to do.

Ok, I see a bunch of ? marks. That means I get to say more =P

1st paragraph: Yeah, that's the basic assumption. Ever since *Endling brought them to everyone's attention, OC's have become pretty common and popular on dA.

2nd paragraph: Looks like you've got the basic idea, since I can answer all those questions with "yes". Also, many OC owners will gladly answer most questions you have about their characters.

3rd paragraph: Panels and pages are entirely up to your discretion. Pick whatever you think will get the desired effect. Note that comics tend to impress more when longer and literature when shorter. Communication with your opponent is entirely up to you, though communication with your teammates is a must.

4rth paragraph: Yup, it's a fun way to push yourself. By the way, think you've got it bad? I'm still at the stage where every thing I need to learn several things just to post a single comic. For example, this weekend I filled an entire sketchbook page learning how to draw rocks. Surprisingly enough, I've never drawn them before.

Extra info:
Lemme post a link to the endzone tournament. As I understand, it's the most well-known completed OC tournament.

You'll have to scroll down a bit to reach the beginning. The tournament in it's entirety took a number of journal pages.
